Babies with attitude
By Jay Cridlin Cridlin@tampabay.com
Conley Strayer is a Boob Man. A Chick Magnet. A Pimp Daddy. A Player.
Not bad, considering he's only 17 months old.
"Me and a buddy took our kids to Hooters at Channelside," said Ryan Strayer, Conley's father, "and all the girls
went crazy."
The attention is due to Conley's personal clothing line, Baby Rock Apparel www.babyrockapparel.com ,
founded a year ago by his South Tampa parents, Ryan and Kimberly.
The line features edgy tees and onesies for today's baby on the go, featuring slogans like "Rock Star," "Drama
Queen," "Ladies Man" and "Hottie." Racier shirts bear phrases like "Boob Man" and "Pimp Daddy." They're
moving about 200 pieces a month and are in talks to get the line into retail stores.
"It's starting to hit pretty good," said Ryan, 33. "Younger parents are looking for more trendy things than light blue
with a red bow tie for a boy."
The line came about shortly after Conley was born. Kimberly and Ryan, who have backgrounds in technology
sales, wanted to swaddle their son in something with a little mor e oomph , so they whipped up a batch of
silkscreened tees.
The first slogan: "Vegas Baby." "We do like the Swingers movie," said Kimberly, 30.
They started handing out baby tees to friends, who liked them so much they ordered more. So the Strayers, who
also ran a promotional company, developed a Baby Rock Apparel Web site and went into business.
"When we first launched it, my mother was like, "That's horrible. You're not going to sell any of those things,"'
Ryan said.
Indeed, some may blanch at the sight of a baby in a Boob Man outfit. But none of the Strayers' slogans are
outright offensive, like those at, say, TShirtHell.com , where parents can buy a shirts reading "Daddy drinks
because I cry" or "F' the Gerber Baby."
"There's been a few logos that have come up now and again that I said, "No, we can't do that one,"' Kimberly
said. "I try to keep it so it's not too edgy.
"But then again, there is somewhat of a market out there, so long as we don't cross over too many boundaries."
The Strayers have other tees in the works - for example, a "Wingman" shirt for boys - not to mention truckers'
caps for all the little Ashtons out there. They've also considered creating clothes for parents who want to dress
like their trendy offspring.
"Most of them all get a kick out of it," said Kimberly, who runs the Baby Rock Web site. "A lot of them will come
up and laugh and think it's funny. Hopefully they're laughing in a good way."
